Fiddler's Dream 2019 Music & Dance Camp
Friday Dec 27, 2019 - Monday Dec 30, 2019
at Cross Point Methodist Camp
Kingston, OK (North shore of Lake Texoma)
There's NO place like Fiddler's Dream
There's NO place like Fiddler's Dream
There's NO place like Fiddler's Dream
Are you tormented by the flying monkeys of life's troubles?
Do you Dream of a place where those troubles melt like lemon drops?
A place where your monochrome life is magically transformed into a technicolor
of music and dance, collecting new friends and experiences as you go?
If so, dust off your ruby slippers and your fiddle, and come to
Fiddler's Dream, a weekend of contra dance, music, and other kinds of magic.
This ALL-VOLUNTEER event is a 3-day/3-night weekend for callers, dancers,
and traditional musicians to enjoy one another's talents and company in a camp setting.
The focus is contra dance and related music. Everyone has the opportunity to help
provide the entertainment for this event, which begins FRIDAY evening
and ends MONDAY around noon (after brunch and dancing).
NOTE: Instead of a sit down meal the first night (Friday),
we will offer a sandwich bar, with chips & dips, etc., for
all campers.
Please consider bringing a side dish for this light meal.
Musicians can jam, play for dancing, and lead workshops in tunes or techniques. You are encouraged to download and learn a few common tunes for the weekend.
Callers and others can lead a dance session (contra, square, English Country, folk, couples dance, etc.) a song session, other activities, or just dance.
Not a musician or caller, but have another talent you just want to share? You can suggest it on your registration form (preferred) or sign up for it when you get to camp. Such workshop examples from the past include singing, juggling, body percussion and water color, to name a few.
The content of the schedule is largely dependent upon the skills of and suggestions
made by those attending, via the registration form.
YOU help fill in the schedule with dance, music,
or other workshops.
In case you have not guessed already, the Theme for the Sunday Night dance is The Wizard of Oz, which premiered 80 years ago in 1939!
Think of the variety of characters beyond the 4 main ones - all those goofy munchkins, or a scruffy hat plus bib overalls
of Auntie Em's farm workers, or everyone can wear striped knee socks/hose.
All Camp Band: All players are welcome. The All Camp Band will play for one 90 minute contra dance segment. Here is a list of possible tunes. You are encouraged to become familiar with them in advance. The tunes are also available online at www.thesession.org, or in Vol 1 or 2 of the Portland Collection tune books.
The Camp: Cross Point Methodist Camp lies on the North Shore of Lake Texoma, about two hours from Dallas or Oklahoma City. It features a lovely dance hall that doubles as dining hall, with a beautiful (and soft) wood floor, lots of large windows, and great atmosphere. The official address is 7310 Rock Creek Rd, Kingston, OK, 73439. More info is on their website: https://okcamps.org/cross-point/.
LODGING is in 2-sided heated bunkhouse cabins, with bathroom in the middle, separating both sides. The newer cabins have nicer bathrooms, large meeting rooms, refrigerator, sink, and microwave. Tent and limited RV space is also available. There are also several motels near by if you'd prefer them. See the list below.
MEALS: All meals are prepared by the camp staff and are included in the 'with meals' registration. The lunch and supper salad bar and snack table have accommodated vegetarians in the past. If you think that the food provided by the camp will not work for you, then you can choose the 'no meals' registration option. Your name badge will reflect that choice. You are welcome to use the refrigerators and microwave ovens located in Madill, Healey, and Wilburn cabins. BEYOND THIS, WE CAN MAKE NO OTHER ACCOMMODATIONS FOR SPECIAL DIETS. PLEASE DO NOT ASK THE KITCHEN STAFF FOR OPTIONS NOT LISTED ON THE MENU.
SNACK TABLE: Please bring your favorite snacks to share, but no chips, please. Most dancers prefer healthy or home-made snacks. If your snacks (like cheeses or dips) need to be kept cool, please bring a small cooler where they can be stored until put on the table, or store them in a refrigerator available in some of the cabins. We need some volunteers to help replenish the snack table throughout the weekend.
COST: The cost with all options is only $196. Several
options are available, but ALL are for the full weekend. There are NO options
for partial attendance. Children ages 1-7 are half price. Infants less than one
year of age are free. There is a late registration fee of $10 per person starting on Dec 2.
A limited number of stipends (scholarships) are available to anyone who has not received one in the past 3 years.
